Chestermere's History

The Town of Chestermere's beginning was approximately in 1884 when people recognized the value of the body of water as a source for an irrigation system. These early C.P.R. pioneers had visions of what irrigation would mean to the lives of the people. The building of the headworks of an irrigation water supply was the birth of Chestermere Lake.

On March 1, 1993, the Town of Chestermere was incorporated. The Town of Chestermere is a new municipality, located approximately 20 minutes from the City of Calgary's center core via the TransCanada Highway. Chestermere's primary attraction is a 750 acre lake and 18 hole golf course, matched only by the prairie sunrises and sunsets.

Tid Bits, from the desk of Mayor Matthews…

We would like to congratulate the YELL Council for their recent award. The Population Class Award is for their efforts in addressing issues surrounding healthy eating and active living. Their promotion of these issues to local youth, as well as the ever popular Bike Park, won the group the award that was presented on April 30th in Okotoks. The youth in our community do make a difference!

A few important issues you need to be aware of for the future:

• Boat Registration – this year decals will be available for all boats registered with the
town. If you have not registered your watercraft yet, please do so as soon as possible.
Refunds will not be issued to residents who have to pay the launch fee and the staff at the
Boat Launch have no authority to issue refunds.

• Water Festival – will be held on July 25th this year in both John Peake Park as well as
Anniversary Park (where the skateboard park resides). Volunteers are needed to help make
this event a success so please contact the Town office if you are able to give some of your
time.

• Commercial in Town Centre – for those of you who are wondering what the new
buildings are along Hwy 1A; the Lubex has just been completed, beside that is Boston Pizza
and in the corner is Shopper’s Drug Mart. Please help these and all of our town’s commercial
ventures stay in business- shop locally!

I hope you had time to attend Country Connections at the Recreation Centre on May 2nd. It
was a quality event with great public feedback and if you missed it, please plan to attend next
year as it is a lot of fun for the entire family!

Mayor Matthews
